Thomas Hawksley - Rivington Pike Scheme Reservoirs

Thomas Hawksley (1807 - 1893) was an English civil engineer of the 19th century, particularly associated with early water supply, Reservoir building, sewerage system design and coal gas engineering projects.

Hawksley was the design engineer for the impounded reservoir system in Rivington and Anglezarke known at its conception as the Rivington Pike Scheme. The Rivington Reservoir System was designed to provide a rapidly expanding Liverpool with fresh, filtered drinking water.

Hawksley designed the five initial reservoirs: Rivington Lower and Upper, Anglezarke, The Rake and Lower Roddlesworth Reservoirs. In addition he designed a 3-mile canal type river (the Goit) which connected the Roddleworth supply to the Anglzarke Reservoir, the first filter beds of their type and the pipeline which carried the water to Liverpool. This pipeline at the time was the longest unbroken pipeline in the world.

Hawksley was, with John Frederick Bateman, the leading British water engineer of the nineteenth century and was personally responsible for upwards of 150 water-supply schemes, in the British Isles and overseas.
